NXNE 2011: We Were Lovers

We Were Lovers @ Czehoski
NXNE

A Shattered Vinyl favourite, We Were Lovers hit NXNE Friday night at the Czehoski, and for the handful that attended they were treated to a duo that plays as hard as they sound.
The duo of Ashley Lamothe and Elsa Gebremichael showcased their electronic-rock for an unfortunately small crowd (more on that later). Kicking off their set was 'People Talk' from the duo's self-titled EP, lived up to expectations with Lamothe's echoing guitar to Gebremichaels' seductive vocals that possessed more depth in person, raw and at times husky, it only made the purrrs and panting all the more sensual.
Aside from the EP tracks Gebremichaels walked the audience through new tracks some of which were still in the process of being fine tuned but even in their infancy We Were Lovers showcased a growing catalogue that expanded on their EP. The tentatively titled 'Dreams' had Gebremichaels' lusty vocals over what sounded like an 80s new wave groove, while another new gem 'Bodies' incorporated tambourine and a more rough around the edges guitar, that was met with Elsa's more urgent vocals.
Red mood lights to the pre-recorded back beats, We Were Lovers were in fine form, but the venue Czehoski was a drag on the band. Far too small and cramped, Czehoski suffered from limited seating and standing room, a kill joy for a duo playing slick dancefloor grooves. Though applause to Gebremichaels for even venturing into the small audience to get some people dancing. The band arguably deserved a bigger venue and more attention but until then We Were Lovers appeared happy to even hit Toronto and take over any space given to them. A duo worth the price of admission.
