NXNE 2011: Braids Make Gorgeous Music

Braids @ The Great Hall
NXNE 2011

Last night Montreal's critical darlings Braids hit Toronto's The Great Hall as part of NXNE and proved one of the festival's major highlights. The band's experimental spirit and talent as musicians was in full force as from the onset, the Hall was enveloped in lush instrumentals.

Lead Vocalist Raphaelle Standell-Preston vocals were sweetly stretched, strained and even yelped over their dense pop songs. The band's translation of their critically acclaimed debut Native Speaker, to a live show appeared effortless especially on the track 'Plath Heart,' Standell-Preston and co. were bang on. Though viewing the band on stage proved difficult, there was no need as small talk nor theatrics were part of the program. It was all about the senses hearing Braids' textured sound, and the lights that pulsed with their beats made for an enthralling experience for the senses and musically.
Braids are a must-see and judging by the rather long, unfortunate line of fans left outside they are one hot commodity and rightfully so. Though a brisk set (a little over 35 minutes) there was no shortage of ear pleasing music, certainly a ticket we'd purchase again.
