The Dodos @ The Phoenix
NXNE 2011
San Francisco's The Dodos brought their new rock-oriented sound of their latest effort No Color to Thursday's NXNE performance at The Phoenix, as the band came to the last stop of their current tour but show no signs of fatigue. Kicking the night into high gear with a magnetic performance with plenty of reverb on guitar, heavy drums, and Meric Long's distinct vocals, the Dodos aimed to please.
Evolving into a more indie rock sound from their folk roots on their latest effort No Color, it comes across in the bands performance, as the boys moved through current single (and a Shattered Vinyl favourite) 'Black Night' with the same energy and pose as found on the record. The Dodos shredded through their set with dizzying momentum from 'Don't Stop' to 'Hunting Season' all the while finding time to create climatic moments in long-winded instrumentals that had the crowd cheering with pleasure.
There was little to complain about as the boys were in fine form showcasing the strength of No Color live, with crisp sound, just a bit of showmanship via some skilled guitar playing and genuine enthusiasm to be playing The Phoenix and NXNE to close out their tour. The Dodos proved to be worth the ticket, and seemed to feed off the crowd as much as the crowd fed off the band, and are certainly a must see for fans and newcomers to the band's music.
