Single Selections: August 9th

Raphael Saadiq - Movin' Down The Line   5/5   Youtube

The electrifying, supremely talented Raphael Saadiq commands a style and sound all his own, drawing on classic R&B, soul and blues influences. His latest single and video treatment goes to 'Movin' Down The Line' an exquisitely crafted song, featuring Saadiq's gorgeous falsetto and a groove that'll have you jiving.

Chromeo feat. Solange Knowles - When The Night Falls   4/5   iTunes

Given the EP remix treatment, Chromeo alongside the highly underrated Solange Knowles make 70s Motown funk with smooth 80s new wave grooves that's every bit as satisfying as it sounds. Knowles channels early Whitney Houston, but if it wasn't already apparent, Solange solidifies herself as the indie alter-ego to big sister Beyonce's mega pop star status.

Laura Marling - Sophia   5/5   Youtube

The British sensation's first single, 'Sophia' off her forthcoming album A Creature I Don't Know is a gorgeous addtion to her pensive, melodic folk tunes. 'Sophia' goes beyond Marling's previous work, with jangly guitars, glistening harmonies, as it mutates from delicate chords to a defiant country-rock anthem. It's a new side of Marling and a welcome change that grows with each spin.

David Guetta - Titanium (feat. Sia)   2.5/5   iTunes

Super producer David Guetta teams up with Aussie singer Sia on 'Titanium,' the latest off Guetta's forthcoming Nothing But The Beat. It's a mundane cliche ridden dance number, with swirling atmospheric sound effects, earth-shaking beat and dripping in synthesizers. Sia is all that's worth noting, showcasing her underrated status as a vocal powerhouse, but that's not enough to save 'Titanium' from Guetta's recycled production. It's not bad, it's just not good either.

Cat's Eyes - Over You   4/5   Youtube

Cat's Eyes, the side project of The Horrors' Faris Badwan finds him teaming up with Canadian singer Rachel Zeffira to create fuzzed out reminiscences of 50s and 60s pop. The brassy proclamations of 'Over You' with its rubbery bassline and girl group inspired sound, it's hard not to be smitten with the duo's latest single.
