Single Selection: August 30th

Zee Avi - Concrete Wall   4/5   iTunes

If you're not familiar with Zee Avi, the 25 year-old Malaysian singer/songwriter, definitely deserves some attention with her striking song 'Concrete Wall' off her sophomore effort, Ghostbird. Bathed in a cappella accompaniment before slowly building in soft layers of pulsing synth, and pliable hand claps. It's laid-back simplicity makes for a refreshing and instantly pleasant tune. A stand-out worthy of attention.

Hey Ocean - Make A New Dance Up   3.5/5   Facebook

Having spent the summer, performing new material at home in Vancouver and across Canada Hey Ocean are offering one of their new songs for free on Facebook. 'Make A New Dance Up' is infectious, carefree pop that's sure to fit in perfectly to any end of summer playlist. The playful tune lives up to its title with horns, hooky chorus and a catchy groove, it's the welcome return of Hey Ocean!

Beyonce - Love On Top   3/5   iTunes

This is no 'Single Ladies' or 'Crazy In Love' but as Sunday's MTV VMA's performance reminded us, an entertainer like Beyonce can make the simplest of pop tunes like 'Love On Top,' a throwback to 80s R&B, without re-inventing the wheel thoroughly enjoyable . Beyonce's larger than life voice, a Diana Ross/Tina Turner hybrid, gives just sass to 'Love On Top''s classic pop structure and simple, yet memorable chorus to make a charming pop song.

Wavves - I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl   4.5/5    iTunes

Wavves' latest, 'I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl', an ode to ex-Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighter frontman Dave Grohl, is a catchy, hook driven pop classic! Recalling Weezer's 'Buddy Holly' this surfer-pop jam with hooky guitar riffs, fuzzed-out bass and lead man Nathan Williams' shaggy vocals is an instantly rewarding, and you'll be singing it for days. Promise.
