Single Selections: August 23rd

Dan Mangan - Rows of Houses   4/5   iTunes

Dan Mangan is getting set to follow-up his Polaris-nominated Nice, Nice, Very Nice with Oh Fortune on September 27th and to kick things off is 'Rows of Houses.' An ambitious, folk-rock track Mangan maintains his husky vocals,  but boasts a bigger, anthemic sound including an electric guitar and a beat the chugs along. It is without a doubt more radio-friendly, but is still the Dan Mangan you've come to know and love.

DreamFace - Someone Else's Hands   3/5   Youtube

After what seemed like endless teasing Edmonton's DreamFace featuring the boy/girl vocals of Daniel Carriere (Ten Second Epic) and Jasmine Ma are infectious. The pop-rock tune is hard to shake, with the band offering two free tracks when you Pay with a Tweet 'Someone Else's Hands' along side 'Get Mine,' the single's video hitting Much music and their debut EP on the way things are heating up for DreamFace.

Florence + the Machine - What The Water Gave Me   4/5   Youtube

The first single and video from Florence + the Machine's sophomore album 'What The Water Gave Me' pushes their secular gospel music to new frontiers. It's towering sonic rock, with Florence Welch's vocals adding considerable weight, and while the yet-untitled album isn't due until November, the single is available on iTunes NOW.

Evanescence - What You Want   2/5   iTunes

In fairness to Evanescence circa 2004, Amy Lee and her revolving door of band mates haven't found much success since Fallen. Thus Shattered Vinyl's reluctance to endure anymore of the band's melodrama on sheet music or behind the scenes. 'What You Want' is Amy & co's first single in five years, trading in angst for defiance and sass, but while the song has a bit more bite than previous efforts, Lee's wail gets drowned out by the overwhelming music.

Calvin Harris - Feel So Close   3/5   iTunes

Harris' follow-up his 'Bounce' collaboration with Kelis finds Harris providing the vocals. It's a summer dance track guaranteed. Light, airy, simple hook and Harris' monotone yet effective vocals, and a smudge of piano for good measure, its enough to make for an enjoy tune.
