Artist to Watch: Young Buffalo

Young Buffalo

Every so often you stumble upon the pleasure of witnessing a band right before they skyrocket into the stratosphere of rock notoriety. One late July evening such a moment occurred hearing Oxford, Mississippi's Young Buffalo perform for the first time. It was a snapshot of a young band still coming into their own but more importantly of one that's instantly captivating and surely on the cusp of becoming a breakout hit. Young Buffalo, performing an infectious blend of noise-pop, rock tunes from the trio's debut EP Young Von Prettylips, turned heads with their charismatic youthful presence and their ear for catchy hooks.
Young Von Prettylips is a stunning introduction to the young trio. Including the previously released 'Catapilah' with its light mix of psych is enthralling, while the immediately gratifying harmonies of 'Only We Can Keep You From Harm' a track that straddles melodic and chaotic like a trapeze act to the anthemic 'Bury Me,' Young Von Prettylips builds considerable depth. A testament to Young Buffalo's skill as musicians, mixing melodic pop with rock's more jagged edges.
The proof of the band's talent is simply in seeing them perform their small catalogue of tunes that sound every bit as good as their recordings right down to the hint of southern twang in 'Speak EZ.' Just as on Young Von Prettylips Young Buffalo were charismatic and full of energy chirping with the audience between tunes, the boys are instantly likable. Young Buffalo will surely continue to gain fans when offering up their joyous blend of noise-pop, rock to audiences as a supporting act alongside The Vaccines and Tennis this fall.
