Red Velvet Snowball 4.5/5 Myspace
Los Angeles duo Pepper Rabbit, Luc Laurent and Xander Singh, bring together a kaleidoscope of sounds and elements creating an imaginative and unadulterate indie pop gem with Red Velvet Snowball.
Marrying the gorgeous pop harmonies with splashes of xylophone over a stiff beat that sounds like the Beach Boys on acid on 'Allison,' while the boys find shimmering guitars clashing with lush reverbed vocals on the haunting, climatic 'The Annexation of Puerto Rico.'
Standouts 'Murder Room,' a supple pop tune loaded with glowing synth and bubbly keyboards, highlights the duo skills at manufacturing pop gems, while 'Rose Mary Stretch' dreamy lyrics, upbeat melody and rich instruments make for an enchanting sunny tune. 'Dance Card' is luxuriant piano-driven psych-pop that glitters with the help of synth like xylophone, and lush vocals, making for an enthralling mid-tempo ballad.
Pepper Rabbit pull together ten diverse yet tightly knit songs through a collaboration of instruments that converge into a dazzling record, that's charming yet haunting. From start to finish Red Velvet Snowball is an adventure through rich textured indie pop, surely one of the best records of 2011, period.
