EP Beat: Prussia

Prussia - Poor English 10" Part 1   3/5   Myspace

Frantic, adventurous, eclectic are three words that best describe Detroit outfit, Prussia's first installment of their three part series, Poor English. A series of three 10"'s set to be released over three months, Part 1 of the trilogy is at its core chaotic yet composed, vulgar yet sweet, and above all ambitious. If you think that's a lot to take in, you're right!

Part 1 is only composed of four songs but it takes some patience and a few spins before fully appreciating what Prussia manages to encompass in such a limited span of songs.
Lyrically the boys compose stories of suicide, misogyny, and sexual dissatisfaction in what sounds like a post drinking haze. On 'Bleeder' singer Ryan Spencer's nasally vocals croon, "your skinny tits and broken ribs/I don't think I'm gonna cum," honest lyrics that only make Prussia more endearing.
Though it's the band's lack of respect for boundaries and song compositions that steal the show. 'Sister' opens as a plucky waltz with gooey vocal harmonies before moving without hesitation into energetic African drum beats, and poppy guitars. From acapella breakdowns, soft strings to bouncing piano keys and rattling guitars Poor English swings between tempos like a child with a short attention span.
Prussia compose an impressive introduction to their Poor English 10" series, but this is not an instantaneous charmer, Spencer's nasal crooning has the ability to be grating, and the child-like mood swings in tempo lose some charm over time but Prussia's ambition and craftsmanship are admirable and should be given attention. Poor English 10" Part 1 kicks off what should be an enthralling trilogy.
