Single Selections: Sept. 6th, 2011

Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All   2.5/5   iTunes

Set to release her fifth studio album, Clarkson's first single 'Mr. Know It All' is a charming, mid-tempo pop song. Gone are Clarkson's signature snarl and hi-octane pop-rock though Kelly's still as feisty as ever, sticking it to a former lover (not a girl you want to wrong). Despite 'Mr. Know It All' being an easy digest tune its a bit of a snooze, leaving you to question if Clarkson's ever had a successful relationship given her history of singles. 'Since U Been Gone,' 'Miss Independent,' 'Never Again,' 'Already Gone'... just an observation.

Jessie J - Domino   1/5   iTunes

Britain's Jessie J is a cautionary tale of pop stardom, take a voice that's undeniably enthralling and water it down over typical studio pop confections. Her latest 'Domino' is at best forgettable and at worst a direct rip of label mate Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' minus the hooks or allure of Perry's hit single. 'Domino' is constructed for Top 40 and it will certainly find radio play though it will quickly be forgotten.

Braids - Peach Wedding   4/5   Soundcloud

Set to release a split 7" with Purity Ring, Montreal's Braids premiered their latest 'Peach Wedding,' a gorgeous, serene track that continues where Native Speaker left off. Glimmering loops, layered guitars and keyboards along with Raphelle Standell-Preston's hypnotizing vocals combine for another stellar post-rock single from one of 2011's most rewarding debuts.

Snow Patrol - Called Out In The Dark   1.5/5   Official Website

Northern Ireland's Snow Patrol return with 'Called Out In The Dark,' featuring the standard Snow Patrol formula of soaring pop-rock with an 'edgier' dance-rock beat. There's not much to be entertained by with Snow Patrol's latest, what else is there to say?
