Record Revue: Grouplove

Never Trust A Happy Song   3/5

Since Grouplove's debut EP Colours back in January, the band's profile has grown with increasing anticipation for their debut full-length album, Never Trust A Happy Song, following the success of their single 'Colours.'

The album kicks off with the alt-rock anthem 'Itchin' On A Photograph,' seting the bar for an anticipated ruckus filled pop-rock record, but all too quickly the album finds an uncomfortable rhythm swinging between boisterous anthems like their aforementioned opening track and smokier balladry.
'Colours' and 'Naked Kids' are carried over from their EP but find only a handful of like-minded tunes. The mis-step 'Tongue Tied' expends energy attempting to achieve bona fide party anthem status with little success, with the free-spirited, charm of 'Spun' a Madness tinged ska-pop jam feels a bit out of place, while moody, sonic guitar-driven 'Slow' finds itself in limbo
Grouplove are best when making sun-kissed jams that embody the best of early 90s alt-rock and indie pop, a charming combo, but lack balance. Too often Never Trust A Happy Song gets lost in its ambition adding new instrumentation and sounds where simplicity works best, but don't count Grouplove out, there is plenty to explore on their debut.

Essential Tracks: 'Itchin' On A Photograph,' 'Close Your Eyes And Count To Ten,' and 'Spun'
