Brilliant! Tragic! Return of Art Brut

Art Brut - Brilliant! Tragic!   2/5

In 2005 rock outfit Art Brut made waves with their debut Bang Bang Rock & Roll, and it's bratty punk persona courtesy of lead singer Eddie Argos' first person narratives.  Six years later and set to release their fourth disc, Brilliant! Tragic! Art Brut is starting to sound a little worn.

Keeping with their previous records, the titles are straight forward, Argos' simplistic, verging on spoken word vocals and bratty attitude are all present.
Standouts 'Lost Weekend' with its catchy hook, or the slow burning groove of 'Sexy' highlight the bands ability to craft clever punk infused garage rock. In turns cheeky and self-serious Brilliant! Tragic! never finds a middle ground, often careening from one to the other. Eddie Argos becomes trying after forty minutes, never more than on the long winded 'Ice Hockey.' Art Brut neither brilliant nor tragic, just tired.
