Single Selections: Oct. 18, 2011

Arkells - Bloodlines   3/5   iTunes

Hamilton, ON's Arkells have dropped their latest, Michigan Left, with their track "Bloodlines" as iTunes Single of the Week. A pleasing jangly rock tune that's radio-ready and like cohorts Tokyo Police Club or Hey Rosetta!, Arkells seem destined for bigger and better things.

Katy Perry - The One That Got Away   2.5/5   iTunes

Say what you will about the charismatic Perry, her Teenage Dream keeps pumping out hit after hit including her latest (6th single) "The One That Got Away." A nostalgic Perry recalls; "We'd make-out in your mustang to Radiohead," making for a mildly charming tune.

The Pack A.D. - Sirens   3.5/5   Official Website

Like Arkells, Vancouver's femme fatale duo, The Pack A.D. were recently given the Single of the Week treatment by iTunes for their cymbol thrashing, rock ruckus "Sirens." Think all-female White Stripes with a mean streak.

Coldplay - Princess of China feat. Rihanna   3.5/5  iTunes

Currently being streamed on iTunes in anticipation of Coldplay's soon to be released Mylo Xyloto, the sonic synth anthem of a tale of two lovers narrated by Chris Martin and Rihanna is effortless but perhaps it's Rihanna's previous collab with Eminem that makes "Princess of China" feel a bit repetitive, minus the domestic violence.

The Ting Tings - Hang It Up   4/5  Youtube

After more than a year away, The Ting Tings premiered their latest video for "Hang It Up." Doing what they do best The Ting Tings keep things simple with a primal rock groove, raw beat, bratty attitude and just a hint of funk makes for one catchy jam.

Big Tree - This New Year (CMJ Live @ The Living Room)   3/5   Paper Garden Records

A live recording of Big Tree's "This New Year" was posted from one of the band's live gigs during this year's CMJ Festival via Paper Garden Records, and while the records is raw, it makes a strong case to hear more of their vibrant pop and gorgeous female harmonies.
