Single Selections: Jan. 13/2012

Joan Osborne - Shake Your Hips   4/5   iTunes

90s one-hit wonder Joan Osborne proved to be more than meets the eye with her performance of hits such as "(Love is Like a) Heatwave" in the 2002 documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Taking on another classic in Slim Harpo's 1966 classic "Shake Your Hips." Notably covered by the Rolling Stones on Exile on Main St., Osborne brings her own swagger, harmonica, husky vocals and all. Bet you can't resist this one.

The Shins - Simple Song   2/5   Official Website

It's been 5 years since the underrated Wincing the Night Away was released. Thankfully James Mercer and company haven't lost their affection for jangled guitars and thick power-pop riffs, but "Simple Song" is surrounded by stale air. The Shins lackluster single doesn't punch through sounding more like a B-side from their 2007 record, rather than The Shins circa 2012.

Grimes - Genesis   4.5/5   Soundcloud

Hypnotic, bright and unconventional, Montreal's Grimes produces one of the most infectious tracks of 2012 to date. (Not that it's a hard distinction.) Angelic vocals float over bubbling synth, a chanting chorus and shimmering keys, it's one enthralling electronic jam, that will have you reaching for the repeat button, again and again and again.

Goldfrapp - Melancholy Sky   3.5/5   iTunes

Set to release their career-spanning The Singles (February 6th), Goldfrapp have released "Melancholy Sky" one of two new singles off the collection. The mid-tempo track soars with swirling strings and spacious, unhurried melodies, Goldfrapp hit a high note looking back at their first five albums.
