Record Review: Oh Land

Oh Land - Oh Land   4/5

Danish beauty Oh Land has emerged onto the music scene with plenty of buzz including February's Artist to Watch, numerous performances at this year's SXSW festival and the red hot single in 'Sun Of A Gun' in the UK. Though 'Sun Of A Gun' may suggest Oh Land to be just another pop star,  it appears to be more of a bait and switch, as for even her hit single eludes to quirkier elements that make Oh Land so unique.

Oh Land may not be shy to embrace her poppy side with energetic, bouncing beats, and cheery tunes like 'We Turn It Up' and 'White Nights' (an instant favourite), but from the record's opening track ears quickly turn to the lush atmospheric pop with it's mechanical ticks and whirls that anchor the records sound.
The stiff marching back beat, gorgeous strings and Oh Land's layered vocals are on full display on 'Perfection' which mid-way through becomes like a broken down marionette doll, where a brief burst of pulsing synth and chanting chorus take hold. 'Lean' is a dark piano ballad that hints at Bjork's 'Human Behaviour' with its rich textures and haunting atmosphere, while standouts 'Human' and 'Helicopter' embrace synth, pulsing beats and even the tickling of a xylophone.
Oh Land's lyrics and composition create textured, mystic pop tunes that never fail to capture your ears and are light years ahead of her contemporaries, more a radio friendly version of Bjork than the next Britney, Oh Land is arguably one of the best 'pop' acts of the year.
