Record Review: Colbie Caillat

Colbie Caillat - All Of You   1.5/5   iTunes

Colbie Caillat is the definition of summer pop, equal parts breezy guitars and undeniable charm having carved out a niche as the female equivalent to former duet partner Jason Mraz ('Lucky'). Continuing with her usual pop-rock sound mixed with folk, surf pop and that beloved ukulele can all be found on All Of You, Caillat's third album.

Caillat's sunny disposition is starting to wear thin with sickly sweet tunes like 'Brighter Than the Sun,' 'I Do' and 'Think Good Thoughts'  border on inducing nausea after a few spins. While the mid-tempo 'What If' (from 2010's Letters To Juliet soundtrack) passes as a less airy offering but still doesn't have much bite. The ballad 'What Means The Most' to Common's cameo on 'Favourite Song' all miss the mark feeling disingenuous and forced.
Caillat is genuinely charming, but cute and charming get old. Given Caillat's recycled themes she's a hopeless romantic, which begs the question has Colbie ever suffered a break-up? Caillat's shown her nack for pop hooks with former hits 'Bubbly' and 'Fallin' For You'  but now the challenge is adding some depth to her sound and body of work. All Of You is a shallow collection of easy, breezy pop tunes that's easy on the ears but we've heard better.
