Best of 2011... Best Songs

The year's best songs included breakout singles about break-up sex from The Vaccines, Coldplay doing their best Rihanna impression, Lady Gaga's arena anthem to Nicki Minaj serving up some bass, and Austra losing it.

First Rate People lived up to their name with a playful, breezy summer single that we had in constant rotation.

47. The Paint Movement - 'Fortune's Window'

Boy/Girl vocals, an unpredictable melody, plenty of horns and just enough chaos to make things interesting and one hell of a joyous listen.

46. Bluebell - 'Normal Heights'

An alluring rhythmic, symphonic pop track from a rather mysterious pop outfit had us hooked.

Video of the Week: Young Galaxy

Young Galaxy - Peripheral Visionaries

Long listed for Canada's 2011 Polaris Music Prize Shapeshifting by Young Galaxy is certainly an album you need to hear if you haven't already. Their latest video for "Peripheral Visionaries" is another good reason to check out the band, an other worldly animated video that's just eerie enough to be interesting, and set to the track's narrative, it's certainly not your typical video.

Single Selections: Born Ruffians

Born Ruffians - Jimmy Jimmy   4.5/5  Soundcloud

A stellar groove and hand claps to boot, this stand out cover by Born Ruffians off label Paper Bag Records True Blue, a Madonna tribute album. The Ruffians turn the Madonna album filler into a bona fide airy, guitar driven summer jam. It's sweet ear candy that you must hear!

Yelle - Safari Disco Club   4/5

French outfit Yelle give us a bouncy dance single in 'Safari Disco Club', their forthcoming album out March 21st. Even if it is sung in French what's not to love about this infectious little slice of electro-pop! Look for Yelle supporting Katy Perry on her tour in the UK this March.
